Local artist R. Phillips Sanderson created the Iron Man Statue in 1935. It is commonly called Iron Man, the Virile Copper Miner, or the Copper Man; its official name is the Courthouse Plaza Miners’ Monument.

It is neither made from iron nor copper. Sanderson utilized a new technique, wrapping the concrete form with nearly 200 pounds of copper wire and creating a copper plating finish.
